Soft skills for a better job placement


People spend around fifteen to twenty years of their life in getting educated. They toil hard to get their graduation or post-graduation certificate and then step into the big world of employment. With great aspirations they attend interviews and when they face rejection, they don’t even realize why they are not getting on board of an organization. And we can see that this is very common in the engineering graduates who are confident enough about their subject knowledge and the grades they have secured. We often see that a job seeker with lesser grades gets selected over the one with higher grades. Why does this happen? This may be because of lack of effective communication skills which is a part of soft skills which are an indispensible requirement for success in an interview or rather success in life in general.

Even if you have great command over your subject, but cannot communicate your thoughts and ideas to others in a crisp and clear manner, then you fail to grab their attention and interest. That is why developing communication skills and in a wider sense, developing soft skills is very important for everyone. Soft skills are a combination of many attributes like social skills, communication skills, positive attitude, common sense, personal habits, leadership qualities and time management. Among people with same educational qualification and experience, what set apart each individual as a unique person are their soft skills. And it is very much obvious that one with better soft skills will win over the others.


How do soft skills work in your favor?

These days many job seekers are equally qualified and have almost same knowledge. What differentiates one from another is how well they use their interpersonal skills and technical knowledge together to their advantage. For a jobplacement it is a prerequisite for you to learn how to interact with people, empathize with others because people who cannot gel with others tend to be avoided which is something no employer would like.

Can Soft skills be learnt?

An important question here is can soft skills be acquired from training? Is it possible to change personal traits that have been there with a person for many years or new traits be imbibed to enhance soft skills? The answer is a definite ‘YES’. Soft skills development can be achieved with sincere efforts and a will to make a difference to one’s career and life. There are institutes which offer softskills training and there are many organizations that consider soft skills development of their employees as an integral part of their business and carry it out through their internal training.

In the current work place scenario it is imperative that every job aspirant or an employee has to hone one’s soft skills because these days it is all about social networking and success depends not only on how well you can work, but also how well you can get others work for you. In case, one does not have enough capabilities to enhance these skills by self practice, it is advisable to take soft skills training. In whatever way, the onus is on every person to refine one’s soft skills on a continuous basis for a progressive career.
